P.J. O’Brien of John Korsmo Construction is superintendent of the year for his safety leadership. O’Brien is a cornerstone for John Korsmo Construction, where for a decade he has expanded the safety culture. His expertise has ensured that his job sites are the safest in the company. Over the past five years he has supervised nearly 48,000 hours of work without a time-loss injury. His injury-to-employee-hours-worked ratio during this period is an infinitesimal 0.000083. As a superintendent, O’Brien supervises Korsmo building site activities, including all Korsmo and subcontractor personnel. He is responsible for quality control, safety, production timelines, and material and property management. O’Brien consistently provides valuable input to Korsmo’s safety committee. His insight helped develop many company policies, including its crisis management policy, serious safety-violation policy and companywide drug-testing program. As a safety leader, O’Brien effectively communicates with Korsmo employees and subcontractors in ways that clearly define expectations and why they are expected. O’Brien gets results because he believes in safety — it is not just another daily job requirement.
